Day 27 - Tuesday April 14: Mamou, LA to Simmesport, LA

Miles Today: 86. Total Miles: 2,070. Terrain: FLAT!
Temp: Mid-60's Time on the Road: 6 hr 45 min

A gentler ride today, heading for overnight lodging with a cycling contact in Simmesport. A leisurely start to the day, with stops to note the crawfish farming activities. Roadkill has changed from the armadillo in Texas to turtles and possums in Louisiana. Today we encountered several other cyclists also heading to Florida. They come from Canada, Alaska, Oregon, and California and have joined up along the way.

Mark from California and Dave from Portland

Dave is riding cross country on a recumbent, with a wind shield and attached banner. Somewhat of a "Captain America"!

We passed through the tiny town of Washington, where Penny stopped at the museum and enjoyed looking at some of the older buildings in the town.

Upon arrival at our destination, we discovered our host was the Louisiana state veterinarian, who put us up in his "barn"! This turned out to be a living area attached to one of the farm buildings, complete with kitchen, bathroom, living room with futon, color TV, etc etc.... Very comfortable indeed! Added to that, his son Justin cooked us a traditional Louisiana dinner of red beans and rice, and sweet potatoes. Justin is an engineering grad from Louisiana State University (LSU). Conversation over dinner ranged from local farming, mad cow disease, rabies, and agriculture disease control.
