Day 13, Tuesday March31: East of Las Cruces NM to Sierra Blanca, Texas

Miles Today: 119 Total Miles: 966 Terrain: Slow ascent of 1200 ft
Temp: 68-72 f. Time: 9 hrs

Long, but reasonably uneventful day. After passing still more pecan orchards and cotton fields being prepared for planting, we crossed the Texas border into El Paso.

Three States Down, Five to Go!

Texas covers 268,581 sq. miles, 801 straight line miles north to south, and 773 straight line miles from east to west (we will be traveling approximately 1200 miles taking around 15 days). Texas has more than 600 miles of Gulf coastline and 25 modern cities with populations of 100,000 or more. Then there are thousands of miles of grassy rolling prairies and dramatic volcanic landscapes for us to see.

Our destination for Tuesday night was the town park of Sierra Blanca, where we expected to spend the night. With the kind permission of the Sheriff, we pitched our tent and set about cooking our evening meal.

Dinner at Dusk in the Park

A couple (Bill and Cindy) walking their dog stopped to talk and ended up inviting us into their home for a hot shower and ice cream and a very good evening in their company. Bill is a retired county judge, among many other talents, and Cindy is still teaching, with more than 40+ years experience. We hope she doesn't mind the grammar of this blog being less than perfect! What a delight to meet them and experience their hospitality and generosity to VV Young Life.... Penny forgot the camera to take their photo.

We then found further effects from the storm at the Missile Base: Don's air mattress had a hole in it!!! Ground was pretty hard by 2AM. Unfortunately the repair kit got blown away too!

Yours on the Road,

Don and Penny

I hope you get that air mattress fixed soon - long days on a bike seat, followed by nights on a hard ground will not do. Maybe some kind soul will help. Keep on pedaling!!

Don, As a fellow biker this is how i take the wind. Strong headwinds are character builders and strong tail winds are confidence builders. Gods speed. Gary & Janet
